China's surveyed urban unemployment rate inched up to 5.3% in July 2023 from June's 16-month low of 5.2%. The surveyed unemployment rate of the population with local household registration was 5.3% and that of the population with non-local household registration was 5.2%, of which, the rate of the population with non-local agricultural household registration stood at 4.8%. The jobless rate in 31 large cities and towns ticked down to 5.4% in July from 5.5% in June. The average weekly working hours of employees in enterprises across the country were unchanged at 48.7 hours. Starting from August 2023, the release of urban unemployment rates for youth and other age groups across the country will be suspended, according to the NBS, citing the need to further improve and optimise labour force survey statistics.
